I can remember working for my uncles print shop back in the 70’s … we had a typesetter. “The” typesetter was a guy that did freelance work and just set type for offset printers. He had this huge machine and all it did was set type. It was a huge hassle and made production really slow at times … plus the choices of typefaces was limited to about 10 or 12. Man, times have changed … I personally have hundreds of fonts ready and waiting at a flick of button to change. Anyway, so much for a trip down memory lane. If you need some great, clean headline fonts …. here are about 40 to look at.

Using strong typography will increase the quality and visual appearance of your work, after all strong typographic skills are one of the many keys to great design! This round-up presents 40 beautiful fonts suitable for typographic illustrations, headlines and sub-headers.

Don’t get me wrong, typography isn’t easy. Having a good font and a keen eye for design doesn’t make you a typography expert. It does however improve your chances! Mastering typography takes a lot of reading, a lot of viewing inspiration, and even more time to put these skills and ideas into practice.

You also need good typefaces, and unfortunately these can set you back thousands of bucks. Although spending your hard-earned cash on a new library of typefaces is well worth it and helps to support the design community, if you’re just starting out it isn’t recommended. Thankfully, there are a bunch of great typographers in the world who brainstorm, design and then create some superb typefaces and fonts purposely to release on the internet free of charge.

All of these fonts have been released to the public for free. Please note that some of them include one style of font (for example, bold or light etc) and other versions (such as italic or strong etc) will set you back a few bucks, ranging from anywhere between $10-400! These fonts can be used commercially however, so go ahead and download these great typefaces and knock yourself out!

Pahuenga Awesome Font

Any graphic artist will tell you that finding the “right” font for the project is essential. Here is a font that is available with limited permissions, but still worth the look. Creator says:

“Inspired by Old Universal Horror Movies, Created with Old/Vintage B-movie Signs. Has Uppercase Alphabet, Lowercase Alphabet, Numbers 0-9. Free for personal use/charity/school projects/church projects. If you plan on selling merchandise, prints, cards, logos, designs etc. Please contact me for commercial usage information.”

Grunge Serifa Font Free

Here is free font at deviantART from SynergyDigital. It’s a grunger. Heavy serifs on this bold, bold headline font. This font definitely has some possibilities in the right application. Again, I kind of got on a roll here with fonts from deviantART … mainly cause I was a little shocked to see them here. I like it because it will show you how many downloads the font has. I don’t know why that is important to me. I use a lot of stuff that is NOT popular as well. This font has had some popularity with 64,000+ dls. Here is the linker.

It’s always great to find great blogs from designers who do fantastic research. At visionwidget.com they have supplied us with 40 NEW and FREE fonts to help us through the 1,000′s of fonts being created daily. I don’t have official stats on that … but, if you are a designer you know that you could wade through countless hours of searching to find the holy grail of free fonts for commercial use. Hurrying to say, that I do pay the piano player a lot for pay fonts. But it is nice to get a true freebie from time to time. You should bookmark this site if you don’t have time to download them all at once. I did download the “Danger” font … you have to have an account at myfonts.com to do it … but most of you should already have an account at myfonts.com. Thanks visionwidget!
